Biography

The focus of Galerija Balen’s annual marking of Earth Day will in 2004 be on the issue of art and biotechnology, with a particular stress on food production. To celebrate international Earth Day, Galerija Balen invites British artist Heath Bunting to present his outstanding work ‘Natural Reality Superweed’ for the first time in Croatia.

His D.I.Y. superweed kit claims to give people the power to disrupt the introduction of genetically-modified crops by growing a ‘superweed’ that is naturally resistant to GM herbicides. Since first being shown at the ICA London, this work has been widely presented internationally, as is recognised by critics as a key encounter between contemporary art and biotechnology. ‘Superweed’ has strong resonances at a time when governments and public opinion, both in Britain and Croatia, are in the process of deciding whether scientific advances in agricultural production are always beneficial.
