Danko Friscic, Studio View

Galerija Balen is pleased to present the solo exhibition of Danko Friščić (1970), academy-trained painter and artist from Zagreb. After several years of working predominantly in video and new media, on this occasion he will show for the first time a new cycle of oil paintings.

Danko Friscic, Opening

Danko Friščić is counted among the most significant artists of the younger generation in Croatia. His painterly practice is characterised by parallel work on  different themes and the refusal to adopt a single recognisable mode of stylistic expression.

In his career to date, Friščić has carried out numerous projects, which have been presented at solo and group exhibitions. As an example, we can take the exhibition Much Too Much, which was held at the prestigious Art Pavilion (Umjetnički Pavilion) in Zagreb in autumn 2003.  The curator of the show, Tihomir Milovac, in fact conceived the exhibition around the artistic production of a circle of  Zagreb artists, in which Danko Friščić takes a central place.

Many of his projects are produced in collaboration with other artists, and show a rebellious attitude to social values and a strong sense of irony. One of the best known of these collaborations is ‘Anatomy Hour’ (2002) with Davor Mezak and Frane Rogić, which refers to and re-enacts the scene in Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Tulp.

This solo exhibition of Danko Friščić in Slavonksi Brod offers the art public an excellent opportunity to acquaint themselves with the work of an artist who is regarded by professional art critics as one of the most interesting authors in contemporary Croatian painting.

This exhibition is organised with the support of the Croatian Ministry of Culture.
